Imagine, Artichokes growing in Radnor - Go figure!

Imagine artichokes growing in Radnor!
Summer arrives tomorrow and it feels like a good time to reflect on the community gardens, both Common Ground in Garrett Hill and Skunk Hollow Community Garden at the Willows.
We've had a long-g-g-g cool spring and the lettuces, arugula, onions, bok choi, beets and carrots, etc. have had a long time ot develop. AND, a generous amount of rianfall. But, things are growing crazily. This morning I harvested my first tomato. Yes, it's 'Early Gir;l', but ... And a gardener at Skunk Hollow has already harvested zucchini, another family is eating potatoes. And, never having been grown here before, yet another gardener at SHCG has fruiting artichokes [see photo]. In fact one of her plants will have 4-5 chokes.
Recently my scientist-son and I had a conversation about phenological dissonance, where the 'normal' sequence of day length, temps, plant growth & bloom, insect presence etc. gets really screwed up. What does it mean for us this gardening season. Surprise, unexpected events and unexpected weather/rain patterns. All bets are off - anything could happen this summer. Expect it fellow gardeners!!
