Accused Archbishop Carroll Athletic Director Released From Jail

Francis Murphy was freed on $250,000 bail, but must stay away from kids.

The suspended Archbishop Carroll High School Athletic Director and coach, accused of soliciting sex acts from a teenage student will not spend Easter weekend in jail.

Francis Murphy, 39, was released from the Montgomery County Correctional  Facility after spending four days behind bars. Warden Julio Algarin confirmed to Patch that Murphy posted a $250,000 cash bail and was discharged from the jail on Tuesday. Murphy was arrested on April 15 and charged with unlawful contact or communication with a minor, promoting prostitution, corruption of minors, attempted corruption of minors, and related offenses.

Murphy is accused of soliciting sex acts from an underage male student that he had recruited to play football for Archbishop Carroll. According to court charging documents the student contacted Murphy after leaving Carroll for financial reasons. Police say the teenager asked Murphy to help him retrieve cleats from a locker at Carroll. Prosecutors allege that Murphy offered to become the boy's "sugar daddy" and offered cash and athletic equipment in exchange for sex acts. Police say the teenage boy informed his mother about advances he said the coach made over Facebook.Detectives then posed as the boy on Facebook. Murphy was arrested at a Montgomery County ice cream shop where police say he had arranged to meet invetigators who were posing as the teenager on Facebook.

Before Murphy had posted bail, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman issued a press release stating  that as a condition of bail Murphy was court ordered to have no contact with the juvenile victim, any person under the age of 18 or any person who is a student at Archbishop Carroll.

Murphy's arrest and the charges against him left faculty, students and parents in the Archbishop Carroll school community in shock. Murphy was the school's Athletic Director, baseball coach and offensive coordinator for the football team until his arrest on April 15th.

He has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.  Murphy is scheduled to go before a Montgomery County judge for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, the same day school resumes after Easter break.
