Carroll Crew Team Honored for Arthritis Fundraising

The team was honored at a school ceremony on Tuesday.

The following was provided to Patch:

The Crew Team of Archbishop John Carroll High School was honored by the Arthritis Foundation, Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter, on Tuesday for being part of the nonprofit's biggest non-corporate fundraising team in 2013. Team Joseph Verrekia, with the help of the Archbishop Carroll crew team, was able to help raise $7,000 for the Arthritis Foundation’s Annual Jingle Bell Run event.

Victoria Verrekia, a senior at Archbishop John Carroll High School, got her crew team involved in the event to support her younger brother who has Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

“This year I really wanted to see how much money we could raise, so I got my whole crew team involved. Everyone worked really hard to raise the money, and we ended up raising more than double our original goal, which was amazing!” said Victoria. “I’m really proud of my teammates and also thankful for the support of Archbishop Carroll.”

Team Joseph Verrekia was formed in the name of 9-year-old Joseph Verrekia, who was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis at the age of 2. Once the Verrekia family familiarized themselves with Joseph’s condition, they came to realize that there were other children who were also living with juvenile arthritis. The family decided the way they wanted to give back to the community and raise awareness about juvenile arthritis was to become involved with the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis. Since 2010 Team Joseph Verrekia has raised over $24,000.
