Getting Schooled

Sometimes high school football goes beyond winning and losing.

Sometimes high school football goes beyond winning and losing. A big part of it is about shaping young lives—and getting players into college. Perhaps no coach does a better job of that in this area than ’s Tom Ryan.

Last year alone six of the Red Raiders’ 15 seniors wound going to college to play football: Dave Bowen (Boston College), Rob Collins (Duke), Dave Kurtyka (Georgetown), Vinny Caniglia (Catholic University), Greg DiCocco (Valley Forge) and Rob McCurdy (Wesley).

“The big thing is academics are so high are Radnor, and the kids get it done in the classroom, it’s why I have to go the extra yard for these kids,” Ryan said.

“Besides preparing for games, that’s the best part of what I do, the recruiting process. Academics is first and I try to find schools where these kids fit. The kids do their part. They do their highlight tapes and I get the tapes out. I help with the contacts. Getting kids in school is as big a part as winning. I want them to ultimately have a good football experience and they want to play at the next level.”

Johnathan Coleman, a former Radnor player with little football experience, and Bowen, are both at Boston College.

“To their credit, they out put the work in during the offseason and in Coleman’s cases, it happened so late,” Ryan said. “They worked even harder after they made their commitment. My dream is to one day have two Radnor kids break Boston College’s offensive huddle. That’s going to be a great day.”
