The Challenge Index aims to measure "how effectively a school prepares its students for college."

By that index, Radnor High School came in at number 19 in Pennsylvania and 1,438 nationwide for 2012.

The Washington Post's Challenge Index is based on dividing the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or other college-level tests a school gave in 2010 by the number of graduating seniors, according to the Post.

Local schools that scored in front of Radnor included Conestoga (4th in the state), Great Valley (9th), Harriton (11th) and Penncrest (18th).

The Post noted that while the index is "not a measure of the overall quality of the school, the rating can reveal the level of a high school’s commitment to preparing average students for college."

The information collected by the newspaper also includes the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies (in Radnor 8.4 percent) and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during high school (46.6 percent).
