Prescription Medication Abuse 'A Serious Problem' In Radnor?

Is too much pressure driving kids to abuse drugs?

The New York Times recently invited students to submit personal stories of the abuse of prescription drugs for academic advantage.

The newspaper highlighted about 30 of the submissions about the abuse of prescription drugs in high school, including one from

'Almost absurdly easy to get'

I attend a public high school in Radnor, PA on the wealthy Philadelphia Main Line. My (very competitive) high school is much closer academically to private schools then public schools, and the usage of ADHD medications such as Adderall and Ritalin are a serious problem. These drugs are almost absurdly easy to get, and I have personally seen them being dealt in school hallways during midterms and finals, or on a Friday before SAT’s...

...The kids who take these ADHD drugs to do better in school are rarely “good kids.” The kids using Ritalin, Adderall, etc. are almost always the same kids who binge drink on weekends and smoke marijuana, but manage to avoid the “bad kids” label by being smart enough not to get caught...

...Until the College Board makes SAT test takers pee in a cup, this problem is just going to keep getting worse.

Most of the essays submitted by students to the Times "claimed that it was a problem rooted not in drugs per se, but with the pressure that compelled some youngsters to use them."
