Radnor Teachers, School Board Approve Contract

Salary, health care benefits will change for union members.

The Radnor Township Board of School Directors and the Radnor Township Education Association (RTEA) have both voted to approve a three-year collective bargaining contract for the union of more than 300 teachers and professionals.

According to the Radnor School District there will be no “step movement” or pay grade advancement for one year.

Teachers will receive an average pay increase of 1.57 percent in year one, 3.26 percent in year two, and 2.66 percent in year three, according to a news release from the district.

RTEA members voted to approve the proposed contract Monday; the school directors voted in favor of the contract Tuesday night.

Union members agreed to increase their contributions toward the cost of health insurance, moving from a fixed contribution to a percentage-of-salary based contribution.

According to the district, in year two, the health care plan will change to a lesser premium-cost plan, which results in increased co-pays for doctor and hospital visits.

“While Radnor’s teachers had to make important concessions in order to achieve this outcome over many months of hard negotiations, the teachers of RTEA worked hard to deliver the same quality education, without interruption, that makes Radnor Township School District a destination district that invests in excellence,” said Carla Skuchas, president of RTEA.

“Both the RTEA and the school district remained committed to a collaborative process that, despite difficult and contentious moments, yielded a positive result representing a new opportunity for both sides to move forward in the business of educating our students,” she said.

The last contract RTEA members were under expired on August 31, 2010. The membership voted down a previously proposed contract offer last fall.
