The Radnor Township and the Radnor School Board will now split the costs of funding crossing guards.

At the Board of Commissioners public meeting on June 10, the board unanimously passed “Resolution #2013-79 —Entering into an Agreement with the Radnor Township School District establishing Crossing Guard Administration and Cost Sharing.”

Prior to the resolution, the township had control over the program administratively for several years, which won't change. But Donald Curley, Ward Six commissioner, noted that the change stems from the new “cost-sharing mechanism” along with the cooperation between the township and the schools to assure that the deployment of crossing guards is efficient.

Before the board made a decision, president Elaine Schaefer raised the question regarding the placement of police officers versus non-officers as crossing guards at certain locations, which is a question that had been asked by many community members in the past.

William Colarulo, the Radnor Police Superintendent, responded that officers are hired as a “special detail” at the request of the schools, to fill the role of crossing guards at certain times and locations during the day.

Curley additionally noted that the resolution mandates that the district and the township be “on the same page”  regarding crossing guard administration in the future.
