Archbishop Carroll Will Play Football Saturday Night

The school's administration opted to play despite a teachers' strike.

will play its second game this season, against McDonough High School at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at Radnor High School, regardless of the strike by the Association of Catholic Teachers. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia told each Catholic League administration to decide whether or not it would be playing football this weekend.

“We’re operating as normal and our building is open,” said Father Edward Casey, President of Archbishop Carroll. “Coach [Joe] Powell is in the private sector, and none of our teachers are members of the bargaining unit. The biggest priority is the commitment to the kids. We’re in the PIAA now and we have different obligations, so we’ll be out there playing. The administration of Carroll made a commitment to keep going.”

The Patriots are 1-0 this season after beating Radnor, 30-20, in the season opener. No fall coaches at Carroll are teachers at the school.

There is some bad news—starting quarterback Jalal Timmons will be lost for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee, injured in the second quarter against Radnor. He’ll undergo surgery next month to prepare for next season.
