Area Eighth-Graders Compete in Blue-Gold Game

All-star game pits Delaware, Chester and Montgomery county's best against each other.

You would think they played together for months, even though they were teammates for weeks.

Eighth-graders from Delaware, Chester and Montgomery counties faced off in the 17th annual Blue-Gold Football game at Widener University’s Quick Stadium on Saturday, with the mostly-Chester county Gold team prevailing over the Delaware county-composed Blue team, 14-0. The game, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, benefited the James J. Costello Tuition Grant Program and Al Consalvi Charity Fund.

It marked the first time the Gold team won since 2008, buoyed by two first-half touchdowns on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Rumer (Ss. Philip & James and Trevor Morris (MDP)—who are both headed to Malvern Prep—and a four-yard touchdown run in the second quarter from Patrick Corcoran (St. Patrick).

The Gold team also received very strong performances from Bryan White (St. Agnes/West Chester Henderson High School) and James Muscarella (St. Maximilian/West Chester Rustin) on the defensive line, and very tough offensive line play from Phil Vecchiolli (St. Maximilian/West Chester Rustin), Eddie Racine (Our Lady of Charity), Parke Schweiter (St. Katherine) and David Stilwell (SS. Simon & Jude).

Rumer made great adjustments. He threw a nice ball and was able to adjust. But Rumer got the bigger meaning of the game.

“We played for an amazing little girl that we all got the meet, Kayleigh,” he said.

Proceeds from the game went to Kayleigh Morgan, a child suffering from Methylmalonic Acidemia, a genetic disorder in which a body cannot break down certain proteins and fats.

White could have arguably been the best player on the field. He knifed through the Blue offensive line a number of times to put pressure on the Blue offense.

“This is the most fun I had in my entire life, playing in front of all these people in this stadium, and for a great charity,” he said. “I played against a lot of these guys on my team, and it was great playing with them. I made a lot of new friendships. This was my last [grade-school] game. I’m really going to miss it.”

On the Blue side, the Blue defense was stubborn, led by Collin DiGalbo (St. Joseph’s/Monsignor Bonner), Chris Gambone (St. Bernadette), Bill Ryan (Holy Cross) and Dan Wasson (St. Francis), and on offense, Rich Tecco (St. Dorothy) and Neil Satterwhite (St. Joseph’s/West Catholic) stood out.

“Playing in a game like this, you’re playing against the best, the speed of the game was a little faster than I thought it would be, so you read and react to everything as best you can,” said DiGalbo, who had a sack and recovered a fumble. “It is a little heart-breaking though, playing in your last CYO game. I have a lot of very good memories of this.”

Added Gambone, who made a couple of stellar defensive plays, “playing in a game like this is great to remember, but I won’t remember losing.”
