Memories of downtown Wayne and township businesses

Having being born in the very early 1980's, I have some memories of things about Wayne that are no longer around.  The purpose of my writing these are to see how many others remember these things and possibly could jog my memory on things that are more sketchy.

Places I remember include the old Villanova shopping center with the Sobol & Cantor shoemaker and store. Next door, was the Villanova Cheese shop which closed too early to experience the boom in the industry that later got picked up by the Cheese Alley, also gone.  

Higgins Bakery was a favorite of my mother and many birthday cakes for my family were bought there. They later moved a couple miles east near the Delaware County Market house. Both of them are gone too. Also gone nationally is Woolworth's. Who could forget the pet shop they had in their basement with fish and hamsters? Ironically, they were replaced by a Petco which closed a few years later.  The model railroad/hobby shop down the street was also popular, but largely overshadowed by Wayne Toy Town where I would go many times. They had great selections of many things that the chains didn't offer.

Restaurants come and go too, and La Fourchette was a mainstay for a long time and the building has had at least 5 other restaurants since. Also was A.T. Samuels in what is now Georges. Other places gone are a pub (The name was Connus I think) that is the current location of The Flag Lady, and another whose name I can't remember where the Great American Pub is now.

The area also had a very small fast food chain called "Delight's" which had at least two locations, one of which is now the McDonald's across from Rosemont Plaza and another which I think may have been on Sproul Road in Marple Township. I remember very little about it other than their chicken sandwiches and frozen yogurt. My parents recall them as having a menu that was a lot healther compared to other fast food chains. This is a place I would really want to find more information about. The business closed 25 years ago which makes finding information about it online impossible.

I also remember a car wash that used to be where Main Line Sound and Design is now that closed sometime in the mid 80's.   

Does anyone remember when there used to be a carrilon downtown with Wesminster chimes that would toll the hour?  Where were they coming from? This was later replaced by the fire department's memorable noon whistle.
