The photo of the happy graduate on crutches is Benjamin Bock, RHS alum, as he crossed the finish line to receive his diploma from West Chester University. This was following a freak accident 2 months ago which resulted in a double fracture to his knee, a 14' incision with a vacuum attached to an open wound for 3 weeks, 2 screws, a skin graft and a whole lot of pain and fear that he wouldn't be …   more ›

Meet the Teacher

Meet the Teacher: Wayne Elementary's Brock Tracy

The health and physical education teacher is trying to give kids healthy habits for life.

Brock Tracy teaches health to 1st through 5th graders and physical education to kindergarteners at Wayne Elementary School. This was the first teaching job out of Lock Haven University for the York County native. He has taught the same subjects in the same classroom for seven years — and he still loves it, he said. Tracy's wife Tracy (yes, that's correct) is a guidance counselor at the school. The two have a 13-month-old daughter, Reese. He sees his students once a week and covers topics like nutrition, fitness, injury prevention, body systems, and drugs, alcohol and tobacco. "Not a lot of elementary schools teach health as a regular subject," he said. "I have to find ways to keep it engaging. Everything I teach is a life skill." What's …

As a parent of 4 children at Wayne Elementary, I have been extremely impressed with the health curriculum and the positive impression Mr. Tracy has been making on my children's health. They know how to read nutrition labels and constantly recite new health facts to me which they really take to heart. I am so happy that Wayne has the program and we have such a wonderful teacher!   more ›

State Senate Adds $500M to Corbett's Budget

Lawmakers discuss vote.

Restoring $500 million to the proposed state budget, the Pennsylvania State Senate approved a $27.6 billion state budget in a 39-8 vote Wednesday. The Republican-penned bill restored funding to basic and higher education, human services programs, hospitals, nursing homes and services for individuals with disabilities—winning the approval of many Democrats, as well. In news releases from Democrats and Republicans alike, lawmakers called the vote a positive first step in the budget process and an attempt to provide Pennsylvanians services that they felt Gov. Tom Corbett's budget initially shortchanged. "Senate Bill 1466 will provide substantial restorations to certain areas of the Governor's proposed budget that reflect the fiscal realities …

What would a 3.28 tax rate increase mean?

On Tuesday, the Radnor Township School Board took a step toward approving an $83 million budget with a maximum allowable 3.28 tax rate increase, reports Main Line Media News. i attended the school board meeting and then the work shop last week. Initially, the Board could provide no clear justification for the increase and so, an amendment was proposed which included in part funding for full day kindergarten. Yet, the Board has no idea how much that would cost, how many students would be served or what the long term enrollment implications are for Radnor. The budget …   more ›

Cabrini Student A Leader in Service

“I’m doing things I love every day,” says Lindsay Anderson.

Cabrini College senior Lindsay Anderson is about to walk in her graduation exercises and step out into the “real world.” But Anderson, a West Chester native, has already seen plenty of the “real world” by working with people who live in poverty, who have no food or who have been forgotten. In addition to dedicating her college life to studying Exercise Science and Health Promotion, Anderson has become a service leader on campus. Just last week Anderson found out that she won the school’s Leader of the Year award. It is “another great honor,” she said. She is President of the Community Service and Outreach Club at Cabrini. The club was founded when she was a freshman and she has been involved ever since. She has travelled to both Ecuador …
