Delaware County properties will be on the block for the monthly sheriff's sale Friday.
About 125 properties are on the list for Friday's Delaware County sheriff's sale. Some are new for Friday's sale and others are continued from previous months. There are five properties listed for sale in Radnor Township, according to the county's website: Sales start at 11 a.m. in the County Council Meeting Room on the first floor of the Government Center Building, Delaware County Court House, Front St. & Veterans Square in Media. There is a minimum total bid amount that must be exceeded for each property to sell. The winning bidder must have 10 percent of the sale price at the auction, with the remaining portion due within 10 days of the sale. Local governments are preparing for the start of a new West Nile Virus season.
It's that time of the year again—mosquito season. Area governments are urging residents to take precautions to avoid West Nile Virus. Both Montgomery and Chester counties have already issued out a release offering residents tips and precautions on the virus. Last year, 60 human cases tested positive in Pennsylvania and four died, according to Pennsylvania's West Nile Virus Control Program. But good news comes to the Southeastern Pennsylvania area: $727,010 in grant money was acquired for West Nile surveillance and prevention this year for Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware, Chester, and Bucks counties, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. 12-year-old Bailey O'Neill, who died from injuries sustained during a playground bullying incident, will be honored by the Philadelphia Phillies during their home game against the Red Sox on May 29.
The Philadelphia Phillies have announced they will dedicate their home game on May 29 to the memory of 12-year-old Bailey O'Neill, who died as a result of injuries sustained during a playground bullying incident in March. See what the life expectancy is for people in your area.
Does where you live in Pennslyvania impact how long your life will be? According to a new study, the answer is "yes, but really not by all that much around here." The Institute for Health Metics and Evaluation looked at the life expectancy gap between men and women cross the country, including in the Greater Philadelphia Area, and broke down the numbers based on the average life expectancy per county. The biggest disparity between the life expectancy of women and men in the area came from Philadelphia, where women outlived men by an average of 7.7 years. The 2013 budget includes a 2.8% tax increase.
The Delaware County Council approved the 2013 budget, which calls for a 2.8% tax rate increase, reports The Delaware County Daily Times. The proposed spending plan is for $330 million. This would mean a millage rate increase of 0.15 mils, or 2.8 percent, for an overall millage rate of 5.452. Delaware County is still seeking volunteers who will be willing to be available to assist and help at emergency shelters in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. High temperatures are expected to approach 100 Tuesday and Wednesday.
The greater Philadelphia area is in for a couple days of oppressive heat, the worst since a 101-degree day July 7, according to the National Weather Service forecast. In the week since that scorcher, the NWS has not measured a high temperature above 92. But with forecast highs of 94, 97 and 96 Monday through Wednesday, the agency has issued an Excessive Heat Warning. As of Monday morning, it was set to take effect at 1 p.m. Tuesday and expire 9 p.m. Wednesday. The agency warned residents to take the usual precautions during the worst of the heat: The forecast calls for a dry Tuesday but a chance of rain Wednesday afternoon and evening, then highs in the mid-80s through the weekend.

Delaware County Council and the county's Department of Intercommunity Health warn residents regarding the West Nile virus and ask for their aid in its prevention.
This year's first detection of a West Nile virus-carrying mosquito in Pennsylvania was the earliest since testing began in 2000, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Several counties, including Delaware County, have now found infected mosquitos. Delco was fortunate to have no human cases of the virus last year and county officials are taking measures to replicate that success. "Staff is working to keep the mosquitoes under control, but you can take some simple steps in your backyard to help," said Intercommunity Health Director Maureen Hennessey-Herman at last Wednesday's Delaware County Council meeting.
