Go Green

Donate Old Towels, Help Pets in Need

Animal shelters across the region are in need of worn linens.

Look in your linen closet and you're likely to find torn towels, blankets, and sheets that may wind up in the trash, or as rags.  Before you toss the old stuff, you may want to consider donating them to your local animal shelter to help thousands of dogs and cats. Sadly, many pets that go to shelters and rescues are scared in their new surroundings, and they are forced to sleep on cold cement floors since warm bedding isn't usually in the budget. Shelters can actually go through thousands of blankets and towels each month, and depend on donations to help provide the animals with warmth during the colder months.  You can help. There are locations throughout the Delaware Valley that are currently accepting towels, blankets, and sheets. Click…

Radnor Plan Keeps Strays Close to Home

The township has created an alternative to sending stray animals to a county facility.

Radnor Township has entered into a partnership with Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals for the care and protection of stray animals found in the township. When a stray animal is found: Radnor will temporarily detain the animal and attempt to find its owner. If none can be found, the township will send the animal to Radnor Veterinary Hospital. After ten days, if no owner is found, the stray dog or cat will be placed in Francisvale, which will look for a long-term housing option. In return for taking the strays, the township will make a $300 donation to Francisvale for each dog delivered there. (The memo of understanding has capped donations at $2,500 per year.) The township will also provide two new streetlights in front of the facility …

At least 39 to 41 of Delaware County's 49 municipalities must sign the three-year, $250-per-animal contract by Jan. 1 if plans for the new shelter are to move forward.

On Saturday morning, the Delaware County Animal Protection Board met with representatives from about 30 municipalities, urging officials to sign a three-year, $250-per-animal contract for the proposed animal control facility in Darby Township. Without signed letters of intent from 39 to 41 municipalities, the project will not go forward, Animal Protection Board Chairman Tom Judge said. The deadline for municipalities to sign the letter of intent is Dec. 16. Packed into a lecture room at Marple Township's Delaware County Community College campus, more than 50 municipal officials and residents listened as Judge and Delaware County Councilman Mario Civera detailed the current plans and figures for the animal control facility.
