AAA Predicts 43.6 Million Thanksgiving Travelers

Most of those people will be on the road. See what other predictions AAA is making about those joining you in holiday travel this week.

Information provided by AAA: AAA projects 43.6 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, an increase of 0.7 percent over the 43.3 million people who traveled last year. This increase marks the fourth consecutive year of growing holiday travelers since 2008 when Thanksgiving travel fell by 25 percent. The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 25. Highlights from this year’s 2012 AAA Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Forecast include: “Thanksgiving travel hit a decade low in 2008 when only 37.8 million Americans traveled,” said AAA President and CEO Robert Darbelnet. “Since that year we have seen a steady increase in the number of travelers …

Holiday Week: What to Do with the Kids?

The house will be filled with family or maybe you'll be stuck in a hotel. How do you keep your kids entertained?

Thanksgiving is days away. You may be preparing to host family in your home and cook up the holiday feast or you may be planning on packing up the family and moving out to a hotel or a relative’s for the big day. Whatever you’re doing, you’re taking your kids and they’re going to likely need some form of entertainment. We’re preparing to head north to New York state to visit my in-laws and we’ve already begun the hunt for potential attractions to keep my 19-month-old son entertained, since the hotel room and a house filled with grown ups will only offer limited interest. Obviously for us, going to see a movie is out, since my son’s attention span isn’t yet that long, but this is a big weekend for movies. Are you planning on heading out to …

Turkey Priced at $28,000

Thanksgiving isn't the reason for the high price of this turkey. Find out what makes this bird so pricey.

As Thanksgiving draws closer by the day, you may be preparing to buy your bird and wondering what the turkey will cost you. In Chestnut Hill, they have a very special turkey that will cost you $28,000. At the Philadelphia Print Shop, an 1860 chromolithograph of a turkey by John James Audobon titled “Wild Turkey. Male. American Cane" hangs prominently on the wall. Even though the print is a second edition, it is actually more rare than the first edition, according to Jane Toczek, who works in the shop. "The first edition in the same size was made in London. The second was made in New York in 1860, but the printing was never completed because most of the clients for this type of print lived in the South," Tozcek said. "New York couldn't do …

What Are You Most Thankful For?

Thanksgiving is the time of year when people talk about what they are thankful for.

There are the big categories of what many people are thankful for, family, friends, health and more and there are the smaller things. This past weekend, I was thankful for the fact that I was close enough to the King of Prussia Costco that I could replace the still frozen turkey in my refrigerator with three cooked rotisserie chickens for my family members who were coming for an early Thanksgiving dinner. A quick look around Twitter shows some other things people are thankful for: Lisa Garman, of Media, tweeted: I am thankful for a weekend with people in my life that I have known for years but getting to know better. Jay Royster, of Plymouth Meeting, tweeted: “Be thankful for what you have” Michelle K, of Wayne, tweeted her blog post: She …

What Are Your Thanksgiving Traditions?

From different terms to different ways of celebrating, people have different ways of giving thanks.

Thanksgiving traditions vary by region and by family. I grew up spending my Thanksgiving with family in one part of the Philadelphia area or another: Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Haverford, Havertown, Wayne, Paoli or Media. To my family, Thanksgiving was about being together. The Thanksgiving gatherings started out a little bit like a cocktail party, but it was about connecting and catching up with family members who we didn’t see frequently. My family didn’t turn on the TV and watch the football game. That just wasn’t part of our tradition. Now, I’m married and frequently spend Thanksgiving with my in-laws, where the TV is frequently on and they call stuffing “dressing.” The food on the table is a lot more starch-based than I’m used to, but …

I grew up in a traditional Italian family. We always spent the holidays with a large group and enjoyed a lot of delicious food. Thanksgiving was one of the best menus. My Mom made escarole soup, tons of escarole soup with the little meatballs, which we couldn't get enough of. I enjoy the turkey, but her stuffing recipe is by far the greatest. It too takes on an Italian twist. Basically, the …   more ›
